ANGUIANO, ARMANDO. 250 Máscaras Fantásticas. Mexico: Talleres Gráficos del Departamento de Divulgación de la Secretaría de Educación Pública, 1954. First edition. Large-format softcover in the original pictorial dust jacket. 83 pages; approximately 33 × 23 cm. Spanish text. Prologue by Ricardo Cortés Tamayo.
A striking and scarce collection of 250 fantastic mask designs by Mexican artist Armando Anguiano. Profusely illustrated throughout with bold folkloric, mythological, animal, ceremonial and imaginary figures, printed primarily in blue and black. An unusual mid-century Mexican artist's book with strong connections to folk art, graphic design, mythology and Surrealism.
The book was also included as an artwork in the Fundación Juan March exhibition "Antes de América: Fuentes originarias en la cultura moderna," strengthening its significance and appeal to institutional, art and design collectors.
Good condition overall. Original wrappers and contents remain sound. Pages evenly age-toned, with occasional minor spotting and handling wear. Small penciled price notation on the preliminary title page. The original pictorial dust jacket is worn and toned, with rubbing, creasing, edge chips and tears, including a substantial tear to the rear panel. Jacket now protected in a clear removable cover. Please examine photographs carefully.
