Francis Bacon's Cipher Signatures, by Frank Woodward. London: Grafton & Co., 1923. First edition. Original blue cloth hardcover with gilt spine lettering. vii, 88 pages, extensively illustrated with photographic and facsimile plates.
A scarce study of the Bacon-Shakespeare authorship controversy, presenting Woodward's theories concerning cipher signatures, numerical codes, anagrams and concealed references to Francis Bacon in Shakespeare's First Folio, quartos, poems and monuments. Includes discussions of the "Simple" and "Kay" ciphers, the numbers 33, 157 and 287, and numerous large facsimiles of early printed pages. Marked "Part I: Shakespeare"; no further part was published. An appealing association item for collectors of Shakespeare, Francis Bacon, cryptography, Rosicrucian literature and literary mysteries.
Good condition. Binding remains firm and the gilt spine lettering is bright. Blue cloth covers show rubbing, scattered marks, small dents and wear at the corners and spine ends. Interior is generally clean with light age toning and occasional minor marks. No dust jacket. Please examine the photographs for condition details.
