MUSEUM OF MODERN ART. Art in Our Time: An Exhibition to Celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of the Museum of Modern Art and the Opening of Its New Building, Held at the Time of the New York World's Fair. New York: Museum of Modern Art, 1939. First edition. 384 pages. Illustrated throughout. Original metallic-gold pictorial wrappers.
Important early MoMA exhibition catalogue celebrating the museum's tenth anniversary and the opening of its landmark new building designed by Philip L. Goodwin and Edward Durell Stone. Published for the exhibition held during the 1939 New York World's Fair.
A broad survey of modern culture encompassing painting, sculpture, prints, photography, architecture, housing, industrial design and film. Includes sections on American popular art, European and American painting, children's art, modern sculpture, American photographers, furniture and industrial design, film history, Georges Méliès and experimental abstract cinema. Preface by MoMA president A. Conger Goodyear.
Good condition. Metallic-gold wrappers show considerable rubbing, fading, creasing and edge wear, with small chips and tears at the corners and spine ends and a pronounced diagonal crease to the lower front cover. Rear cover is rubbed and unevenly faded. Pages are age-toned with some damp staining and waviness, particularly to the preliminary leaves and upper margins. Binding remains intact and the catalogue is complete and usable. Please examine photographs carefully.
