First edition of Crusader Without Violence: A Biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. by African American historian Lawrence D. Reddick, published by Harper & Brothers in 1959. This was the first full-length biography of Martin Luther King Jr., written while King was still emerging as the leading voice of the American Civil Rights Movement.
Presentation copy warmly inscribed and signed by the author in red ink on the front free endpaper: "My best for Anton W. Van Bekkum — L. D. Reddick." The signature is that of author L. D. Reddick, not Martin Luther King Jr.
Reddick knew King personally, participated in the Montgomery Bus Boycott movement, accompanied King and Coretta Scott King on their influential 1959 journey through India, and drew upon firsthand access to King's early life, family, ministry, and philosophy of nonviolent resistance. Illustrated with historic black-and-white photographs.
Good / VG hardcover in a Fair original dust jacket. The book remains sound and complete, with age-toned pages, shelf wear, rubbed extremities, and some spotting and discoloration to the page edges. The original dust jacket has substantial rubbing, creasing, chipping, tears, areas of loss at the spine ends and corners, and old clear-tape repairs along the upper edge. Original $3.95 price is present on the front flap. Please examine photographs carefully.
