First American edition of The Desire and Pursuit of the Whole: A Romance of Modern Venice by Frederick Rolfe, Baron Corvo. Published by New Directions, New York, in 1953, with an introduction by A. J. A. Symons and a foreword by W. H. Auden.
A notable early New Directions publication featuring an original dust jacket design by Andy Warhol, created during the period when Warhol was working extensively as a commercial illustrator in New York. The front flap explicitly credits: "Jacket design by Andy Warhol."
Hardcover in turquoise/green cloth with original illustrated dust jacket, retaining the original $4.00 price on the front flap. 299 pages.
Condition: Very Good book in Fair to Good dust jacket. Book is clean and sound with light age-toning. Original Warhol dust jacket shows significant edge wear, chipping and losses, including a noticeable loss along the upper front panel, plus rubbing and general age wear. Jacket remains substantially complete and is an important early Warhol design. Please see photographs for condition.
